Travel Pals – Joining Up On Your Travels

Want to use your travels as an opportunity to meet up with new, like minded people?

Connect up with the world. Take a look at the opportunities available…

CouchSurfing is based on the principle that there are lots of people out there who want to freely welcome you into their cities and homes and show you what its really like where they live. Take a look at the sites to find like-minded people who share your interests and are keen to show you the best that their town has to offer.

  • COUCHSURFING A free volunteer-based worldwide network helping you ‘meet and adventure with new friends around the world’. Connecting travellers with members of local communities Couchsurfings founders say they’ve made more than 5 million connections on the site.
  • HOSPITALITY CLUB An Internet based ‘inter-nation service’ founded in Germany with more than 600,000 members in over 200 countries.  Aiming to bring people together; hosts & guests, travellers & local people. Free to join and view profiles, send messages and connect up.  Run by volunteers who aim to put travellers in touch with people in the place they visit and give local people a chance to meet people from other cultures
  • FREE GREETER – The Global Greeter NetworkGreeters are volunteers who love their city so much they volunteer to show their city to visitors.  Not as a guide, but more like a newly met friend.  They’ll show you special places that mean something in their lives as well as things visitors specifically ask for such as architecture, shopping and parks, – or a less well known neighbourhood. (They’re not professional guides, so leave tours of museums and art galleries for example, up to the professionals)  Started in 1992 in New York City by friendly residents who still go out of their way to help ‘out of towners’ feel welcome, the idea grew and grew and has now spread all over the world. All the programmes are free, offering greeter services to individuals or small groups by enthusiastic local residents who love their home city.

INSIDE TIP: Love your own city and want to show it off too? – why not look at becoming a volunteer?  or if there isn’t one, look at starting a greeter concept in your city.
