Worried about booking your first singles holiday?

Putting all those myths to rest and spilling the beans, this weeks guest blog on the kind of questions you ask when looking for a holiday

Paul Xerri-Keen who has been working with leading singles holiday specialist tour operator, Travel One for 10 years, reassures those thinking of booking a solo trip for the first time and spills the beans on what it’s really like.

I know it can be a very daunting decision to book a singles holiday for the first time. I work for Travel One, which has been offering singles holidays for 18 years, so I have definitely heard it all before – no matter how big or small your concern, the best thing is simply to pick up the phone and ask! I’m always happy to reassure anyone who is worried about booking their first holiday – it’s completely normal and natural to be worried when you are doing something for the first time.

The first thing to make clear is that we are definately NOT a dating agency. There’s no pressure at all, it’s all about going on holiday, making some new friends, and relaxing and enjoying yourself. Of course, we do have people who meet their future life partner on one of our holidays, and it is lovely when it happens, but it certainly isn’t the expectation of most of our guests.

I love the way one of our regular guests described our holidays as “good holidays made even better by enjoying them with new friends” –  for me, that sums it all up!

The people who take Travel One holidays are travelling on their own for all sorts of reasons – some are single and prefer company on holiday, others have been bereaved and are finding a new way to holidays, others are married but have a partner who doesn’t enjoy travelling or is unable to travel.

Our guests often describe Travel One as being like a family, and the atmosphere is usually a bit like a house party. The people who travel with us are all looking to make friends, so everyone is in the same boat. Whatever your age and your interests you are sure to find someone like you. Unlike some companies, we don’t impose any age limits because our guests always tell us that they enjoy having a mix of ages. At the beginning of each holiday, we have a welcome party when our rep will introduce everyone – it’s normal to feel a bit nervous at first but we find that our guests soon relax and enjoy themselves.

Some people are put off by the idea of a group holiday and worry that they will be herded around as if they are on a school trip. I can definitely say that that doesn’t happen on our holidays. We have excursions organised if you want to book them and take part, but if you would rather explore on your own, or simply laze around and read a book, that’s fine too. You choose how much (or little) time you want to spend with the group.

Another worry that people have is not wanting to eat alone. Most of our holidays are on half board or all inclusive basis, so a table will be reserved in the restaurant for everyone to eat together. It’s a good opportunity to chat over the day’s events and make plans for the next day. Often people choose to meet up in small groups, to explore, or simply to meet to have lunch together.

We offer lots of different types of holiday, so whether you like lazing in the sun, exploring historic and cultural sites, or would prefer a city break or a cruise, we are sure to have something to suit you. You can always give me a call and I’ll tell you what availability we have for when you want to travel. We tend to avoid high season so that we can keep our costs down, so most of our holidays tend to be in early or later summer. There are also year-round options, for winter sun in the Canaries for example, or for a winter cruise to take in atmospheric Christmas markets.

You don’t have to travel from London either, if that’s not convenient for you – we offer lots of regional flights too – so whatever you want we will make sure we help you find a holiday to suit you.

Last but not least, you definitely will NOT be paying a single supplement or allocated a poky, broom cupboard for a room. All of our holiday prices are based on staying in a twin or double room for SINGLE occupancy. We pride ourselves on offering value for money, and I think if you look around you’ll find that we offer the best prices in the market.

So, what are you waiting for?  Visit our Travel One website to find out more,  or if you still have questions, or want to check or find out what kind of holiday would suit you best then feel free to give me a call on 020 79297773

You have nothing to lose – and lots of new friends and holiday experiences waiting for you on your next Travel One singles holiday!
