Are Cinemas Literally the Coolest Places to Be Right Now?

With summer temperatures soaring and our days (and nights) super hot at the moment, there’s no better place to escape than an air-conditioned cinema!  Sit back in comfort, enjoy a cool drink and lose yourself in a great film for a couple of hours. A perfect way to unwind after a hot day—and a much better option than melting on the sofa at home.

In our humble opinion, there’s still nothing quite like seeing a brilliant movie on a big screen with all the amazing sound effects seemingly coming out of nowhere and indulging in a bit of escapism. So as the evenings are lighter,  now is a really good time to think about supporting the cinema industry by treating yourself to a cinema ticket and maybe even one of those enormous tubs of popcorn.

If you haven’t been to the cinema for a while, prepare to be impressed! Not only is the picture and sound quality superb,  comfy seats with plenty of legroom come as standard in most cinemas. Some cinemas even have armchairs and a food order service for anyone wanting their cinema snacks bought to their seats. Some of the small independent cinemas go one further offering a glass of wine with your ticket.

Deals can be a bit more difficult to find at this time of year, but there are some out there. Vue online tickets at selected times from as little as £2.49,   Cineworld deals on 2D films on Tuesdays with a Tesco Clubcard, Showcase Cinemas movie nights from £5.99 and Odeon Saver Mondays with tickets starting from £4.50.  And don’t forget to support your local independent cinemas when you can, they also do deals with all sorts of extras and need all our help and funds to keep going.

Missing that  big film feeling? What’s On Now & Coming Soon

Whether you’re in the mood for edge-of-your-seat thrillers, laugh-out-loud comedies, nostalgic family favourites or epic adventures, there’s never been a better time to head to the cinema. With films like Disclosure Day, The Invite, Toy Story 5 and Supergirl already lighting up the big screen, there’s something for every mood. And it’s only just getting started, with Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, Spider-Man: Brand New Day and more blockbuster releases arriving over the coming weeks. So, if you’re looking for the perfect excuse to treat yourself to a great night out, grab some popcorn and let the magic of the movies do the rest!

Here’s our pick for the month ahead, from amongst the releases out there.

DISCLOSURE DAY

Directed and co-produced by legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg, Disclosure Day is a haunting sci-fi thriller where every answer uncovers an even darker mystery. Starring Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson and Colman Domingo, the film takes you to the edge of fear, where truth is more terrifying than fiction. As hidden forces begin to emerge and the world stands on the brink of an unimaginable revelation, one question remains…

If you discovered we were never truly alone… would you want to know the truth?

Still showing in most cinemas, critics are already calling Disclosure Day one of the year’s most unforgettable cinematic experiences. Dark, mysterious and impossible to ignore, a film that will stay with you long after the credits have rolled and the lights have come up!

TOY STORY 5

Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton and produced by Lindsey Collins, Toy Story 5 reunites the iconic voices of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack for another unforgettable Pixar adventure. This time, Woody, Buzz and the gang face a whole new challenge as the world of toys collides with modern technology.

I have to admit, Toy Story is my all-time favourite film. Yes, we know it’s aimed at little ones, but don’t let that fool you—it’s packed with laugh-out-loud moments, heartwarming friendships and those clever little life lessons that adults appreciate just as much. It’s the perfect excuse to switch off for a couple of hours, embrace the nostalgia and remember why we all fell in love with these characters in the first place.

And while we’re here, a huge good luck to the brilliant Sara Cox as she begins her new BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show this month. What an amazing way to kick things off, with her very first guest being the one and only Tom Hanks, chatting all things Toy Story 5!

THE ODYSSEY

Directed, written and produced by the incomparable Christopher Nolan, alongside producer Emma Thomas, The Odyssey stars Matt Damon as the legendary Odysseus, with Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron leading an incredible ensemble cast.

If you’re looking for something a little more thought-provoking than the average blockbuster, this could be the film for you. Inspired by Homer—no, not the one from The Simpsons!—but the ancient Greek poet whose epic tale has captivated audiences for thousands of years, the film promoter say it’s a breathtaking story of survival, resilience and the determination to find your way home against impossible odds. It’s a reminder that courage, patience and perseverance can overcome even the greatest challenges.

For me, there is absolutely nothing like experiencing an big budget epic on the big screen. The scale, the breathtaking visuals and those incredible sound effects immerse you in every moment of the adventure. No matter how impressive your TV set-up is (which mine certainly isn’t!), it simply can’t recreate the magic of watching a film like this in the cinema.

The Odyssey is released in UK cinemas on 17 July 2026, and as the Guardians film critic says, ‘If you see one movie this year- this is it’.

THE INVITE

Fancy something a little lighter after all those edge-of-your-seat thrillers? The Invite might be just what you’re looking for.

Directed by Olivia Wilde The Invite stars Seth Rogen, Penélope Cruz, Edward Norton and Olivia Wilde herself. It’s a witty comedy-drama with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, awkward encounters and very strong language, so it’s definitely one for the grown-ups!

What starts as a simple dinner invitation between neighbours soon descends into what the film promoters call a hilarious, unexpected and wonderfully uncomfortable evening where relationships, secrets and plenty of honesty are all served up alongside the food. It’s funny, clever and just a little bit outrageous, proving that sometimes the best conversations are the ones nobody planned to have.

Whether you’re treating yourself to a solo cinema trip, going along with friends, or simply looking to switch off for a couple of hours, The Invite looks like a brilliant choice. Funny, unpredictable and packed with awkward moments, it’s the kind of film that will have you laughing one minute, cringing the next and smiling all the way home.

The Invite arrives in UK cinemas on 3 July 2026, so why not grab some popcorn, settle into a comfy seat and let someone else host the dinner party for a change? Just don’t expect a quiet evening…!
