Does Speed Dating Work if you’re Looking for a Partner in 2026?

Does Speed Dating Make Sense in a World of Dating Apps?

Speed dating might sound like an old-fashioned concept in a world apparently obsessed with Tinder, Bumble, and similar online apps, but it seems like the practice is experiencing a resurgence.

According to reports from the ticketing platform Eventbrite attendance at dating events increased by 42% between 2022 and 2023, growing by another 60% in 2025 and it seems like people of all ages are getting involved. Millennials and Gen Z singles are growing increasingly tired of the unpredictable world of online dating. At the same time, people in their 40s and over are looking for more authentic experiences, where they actually get to interact with people in-person, rather than trying to “check someone’s vibe” through a smart screen.

So, is speed dating officially back? Does it work, and is it better than online dating? Here’s our thoughts.

Does Speed Dating Work? The Revival of Speed Dating

Before dating apps and websites weren’t much of a thing, there were various forums and sites where you could potentially meet new people, but thought to be a bit risky, and ineffective. (You’d never  tell your child to go and meet a stranger in person after they’d only ever spoken to them online so why take the same risk yourself?)

The digital revolution has meant that social media sites have made interacting with new people on the web feel more natural, and apps seem like a convenient way to basically “advertise” yourself to as many people as possible, essentially widening the dating pool.

The only problem? Dating apps might be convenient, but they’re not always effective. Only about 10% of people in committed relationships met their partner on a dating site. Alternatively, a massive 46% of people say their experience with these apps and sites has been negative.

The result? We’re gradually entering an era of dating app fatigue. People are growing tired of swiping, and are looking for ways to recapture the magic of actually meeting people in person.

Speed dating essentially combines the convenience of online dating apps, with real-world experiences. You get the same “swipe-like” experience by meeting people for a pre-set amount of time (usually about 3 minutes), so you’re not tied into the commitments of a full date. At the same time, you don’t have to figure out whether you’re compatible with someone by analysing their use of grammar and emojis.

 SPEED DATING  – THE PRO’S & CON’S

So, does speed dating work? That depends on who you ask. One speed dating company reported that around 80% of the attendees at their events get a match, but that doesn’t guarantee they’ve found their life partner. However, I think there are some benefits to speed dating you just can’t get with a dating app or website. Let’s consider the pros and cons.

THE PRO’S:

  • Authentic human connections: In a time dominated by online profiles and virtual conversations, there’s nothing like actually interacting with someone in person. It’s a chance to escape that annoying digital fatigue we all feel with constant online swiping and tapping, and get back to what matters – humanity.

  • Deeper insights: How much can you really tell about someone based on their dating profile and a handful of instant messages? Even if you full head-over-heels for your virtual partner, you can’t tell if there’s any chemistry until you meet them in person. Speed dating gives you a chance to discover if there’s a spark straight away.

  • Less stress: Speed dating is designed to help you filter through prospective partners quickly. You’re not under any obligation to respond to someone you’re not interested in, or maintain a conversation with them. You’re not going to be labelled a “ghoster” if you decide to walk away from an event without saying another word to someone you met. It’s simple.

  • The fun factor: Speed dating events are made to be fun. Even if they don’t include games and party music, they give you an opportunity to get out of the house, bond with existing friends, and maybe make some new ones. They’re fun, exciting, and interesting.

  • Safety: There’s also a sense of safety in speed dating you don’t get online. You know the event is being organized by a professional group, and the people you meet won’t walk away with any of your details – unless you want them to. In my opinion, that’s definitely preferable to navigating an ever-growing sea of online dating scams.

THE CONS:

  • Focus on the first impression: Speed dating can make both parties feel pressurised to make a lasting first impression in a short amount of time. That can be pretty stressful, and push us to make snap-second judgements about someone, based on their appearance or what they say when they’re feeling anxious.

  • The rush: Sometimes, speed dating can feel a little rushed. A few minutes isn’t always enough time to decide if you want to get to know someone better – particularly if you’re both feeling anxious or awkward.

  • There’s no guarantee: No speed dating company is going to guarantee you’ll find your perfect match – or even any match for that matter. You might walk away from the event with nothing but memories and a new experience under your belt.

So, Does Speed Dating Work?

Ultimately, it’s impossible to accurately answer the question, just like any form of dating, speed dating doesn’t guarantee you’ll meet the person of your dreams. But if you’re single, and looking to mingle as they say, it can’t hurt to try something new.

The face-to-face interaction of speed dating, in our opinion gives you more benefits than you’ll get from a standard dating app. Even if you don’t find a match, you’ll have a chance to connect with real human beings, and disconnect from the digital world for a while, which has got to be a plus.

You might even find your confidence increases the more you interact with strangers in these secure settings. Want to give it a try? Here’s our top pick of the speed dating sites we found out there:
