The Dos, Don’ts and the Basics in 2026
Most of the people I know are familiar with the concept of speed dating. Even if you’ve never attended a speed dating event yourself, you’ve probably seen the experience portrayed by various movies and television shows over the years.
However, just like the world in general, speed dating has evolved a little in recent years. Sure, you can still expect to be placed in a room with a group of other people, and asked to engage in a number of fast-paced conversations.
But, as the issue of dating app fatigue continues to grow, and single people search for more human, authentic, and engaging experiences, speed dating events are becoming a lot more diverse.
I’ve delved into the available research online, and talked to a handful of friends who have attended recent speed dating events, to help define what speed dating is really like right now.
What is Speed Dating? The Basics
Speed dating is an “organised” social event designed to help single people meet and interact with others. Typically you’ll choose an event you’re interested in from a speed dating website (like SpeedDater or Fastlove), register to “attend” the event, and pay a fee.
When the day of the event arrives, you’ll visit a specific venue, with lots of other single people (and sometimes food or drinks). At the venue, the event organiser will usually give you a nametag and a scorecard (or something similar), and tell you what the event will entail.
For instance, you’ll be told how many people you’re going to meet, how long each “date” should last, and if there are any rules you have to follow. From there, you simply start talking to people, and buzzers will sound whenever a “round” is over, signalling it’s time to move to the next date. After all the rounds are over, there might be a “mixer” where everyone can chat freely, or you might just be asked to submit a scorecard to see if you’ve “matched” with anyone.
Simple enough right?
What’s Speed Dating Really Like?
So what is speed dating like today? Though the basics of speed dating events have stayed pretty consistent for years now, there are some differences to what some of you reading this might have experienced back in the 80s and 90s.
For instance, based on the people I’ve spoken to about their experiences, these events are often a lot more dynamic and playful these days (with more games and activities). There’s also a lot of more “niche” events, tailored to people with specific interests, ages, and backgrounds.
Here’s what a close friend of mine told me after attending an event in London:
“You still pay for a turbo-charged dating experience. Basically, you’re charged a fee for a pre-determined set of mini dates that last about 5-10 minutes. At the end of that, you decide if you want to meet certain people again, or just forget all about them. It’s not that different to dedicating a few minutes of your life to a conversation with someone on Tinder. The biggest difference is you’re actually there, in the event, experiencing the interaction.”
The Speed Dating Evolution in 2026:
So, the average speed dating event, in that case, builds on the novelty that real-person interactions have become in the digital world. We’re so used to meeting people online, that talking to strangers in person is a thrill in itself.
However, as I mentioned above, there are more types of speed dating events out there now. Another friend of mine attended one where each pair were given basic games (like connect 4) to play during their conversation to help them break the ice, or quiz sheets to fill out. Some companies, like Date in a Dash, host “jenga speed dating nights”, and even mini discos.
From what I can tell, the overall focus on speed dating right now isn’t necessarily on trying to connect people to their soul mates, but helping them branch back into the dating pool, connect with people, rebuild their confidence, and have a little fun.
