‘Before the weather gets better, its going to get worse’
That’s what the weather forecast man said last night. Having had a bit of a (albeit absolutely fantastic) false alarm a couple of weeks ago that’s what he said, its going to get worse before it gets better.
Home Made Soup Recipes for One
In quantity order: Water, 28% vegetables in varying proportions (Carrots, Garden Peas, Onion, Potato, Swede), Tomato Puree, Cooked Pasta, Haricot Beans, Modified Maize Starch, Sugar, Rapeseed Oil, Salt, Concentrated Carrot Juice, Antioxidant, Ascorbic Acid, Acidity Regulator, Citric Acid, Onion Powder, Yeast Extract, Garlic, Flavouring, Oregano Extract, Parsley Extract.
Yum yum not! These are the ingredients in a can of supermarket soup, a can of vegetable soup with 28% vegetables, not too mention a whole bunch of other things that I didn’t know existed.
A good reason, if any should be needed, to have a go at making your own soup and trying out some of our soup recipes with not so much as a spec of ‘Acidity Regulator’ included in the ingredients.
Here’s why you should make your own soup:
- Homemade soup tastes much better than canned or supermarket-bought soup.
- You get to control the quality of the ingredients you put into your soup. Ready made soups, particularly cheaper variety’s, are often made with lower grade ingredients along with additives, preservatives, flavourings and all sorts of other things. Not the things we have in our own kitchens.
- Homemade soup can be very low in calories, and a great way to fill you up. (Enough said)
- You also get to season your soup to your own taste and control the salt content. A big problem with prepared foods, many of which come with really unhealthy high sodium content, – not good for our long-term health prospects.
- Soup really is easy to prepare. There’s very little work involved and it’s a good way of experimenting and using up spare food and veggies loitering in your fridge. You can’t overdo or burn soup.
- You can freeze most soups, so double up on ingredients or make more, – enough to freeze to keep you going.
- Any spare portions are also a really good ‘door opener’ or ‘ice breaker’ to share with friends, neighbours or family, there really is nothing like it for bringing a smile on a cold or gloomy day.
