In our humble opinion, there’s still nothing quite like seeing a brilliant movie on a big screen with all the amazing sound effects seemingly coming out of nowhere and treating yourself to a bit of escapism. So as the nights draw in, now is a really good time to think about supporting the cinema industry by treating yourself to a cinema ticket and maybe even one of those enormous tubs of popcorn.

It’s also that time of the year when all the really good grown-up movies start coming out, with actors publicising those films most likely to be Academy Award contenders in time to submit their formal entries in advance of the October deadline for the Oscars 2025 Awards Ceremony. I don’t know about you, but I could kick myself when the actual Oscars are announced in March with the ‘must see’ winning films announced, when they’re no longer showing on the ‘big screen’ and it’s more or less too late to see them at many national Cinemas.

If you haven’t been to the cinema for some time, prepare to be impressed! Not only is the picture and sound quality superb, comfy seats with plenty of legroom come as standard in most cinemas. Some even have armchairs and a food order service for anyone wanting their cinema snacks bought to their seats. Some of the small independent cinemas go one further offering a glass of wine with your ticket.

With all sorts of offers springing up now, some cinemas like the Odeon are offering midweek tickets from as a little as a fiver, representing a chance to get out there and get some good value entertainment.

If you’re a thriller fan and up for some much-needed scary bits, as always at this time of year there are some really good psychological nail biting films coming up over the next couple of months. There’s also a good mix of lighter comedy and historical films with some of the more serious Oscar contenders also showing.

Here’s our pick for the month ahead, from amongst the releases out there.

SPEAK NO EVIL

Pitched as a psychological thriller, Speak No Evil is remake of a 2022 Danish film of the same name. Staring James McAvoy and, Mackenzie Davis and filmed in Croatia and Gloucester the film follows a couple who are invited by another couple to their country house for a weekend holiday; the hosts soon begin to test the limits of their guests as the situation escalates! Don’t know about you but I’m scared already just looking at the poster and thinking about it.

Released in the USA a week before its UK release, 90% of 92 critics’ reviews are positive, so worth a peep, albeit with your hands covering your eyes.

FIREBRAND

For those enjoying a good historical film Firebrand is one to watch. The film follows the only surviving Queen of England, Katherine Parr (played by Alicia Vikander who unsurprisingly, is reluctant to become the sixth wife of the wife of the tyrannical King Henry VIII (played by Jude Law).
Finding herself under ever-increasing scrutiny and suspicion the film follows her literal quest to survive the perilous last months in the life of her ailing and abusive King. Will it be her or the King? Who meets their end first?

WOLFS

If you’re looking for something a little more light-hearted George Clooney and Brad Pitt reunite for the action-comedy WOLFS. Clooney plays a professional fixer hired to cover up a high profile crime. But when a second fixer (Pitt) shows up and the two “lone wolves” are forced to work together, they find their night spiralling out of control in ways that neither one of them expected.

Never forgetting that new films always look better on the big screen (in our not so humble opinion) Wolves is due for cinema release on the 20 September and then goes global on Apple TV+ on the 27 September.
