In our humble opinion, there’s still nothing quite like seeing a brilliant movie on a big screen with all the amazing sound effects seemingly coming out of nowhere and indulging in a bit of escapism. So as the nights draw in, now is a really good time to think about supporting the cinema industry by treating yourself to a cinema ticket and maybe even one of those enormous tubs of popcorn.

It’s also that time of the year when all the really good grown-up movies start coming out, with actors doing the promotional rounds for those films most likely to be Academy Award contenders in time for next years Oscar Awards Ceremony. I don’t know about you, but I could kick myself when the Oscars are announced in March, with most of the ‘must see’ winning films no longer available on the ‘big screen’.

If you haven’t been to the cinema for some time, prepare to be impressed! Not only is the picture and sound quality superb, comfy seats with plenty of legroom come as standard in most cinemas. Some cinemas even have armchairs and a food order service for anyone wanting their cinema snacks bought to their seats. Some of the small independent cinemas go one further offering a glass of wine with your ticket.

With all sorts of offers springing up now, some cinemas like the Odeon are offering midweek tickets from as a little as a fiver, representing a chance to get out there and get some good value entertainment.

If you’re a thriller fan and up for some much-needed scary bits, as always at this time of year there are some really good psychological nail biting films coming up in the next few weeks. There’s also a good mix of lighter comedy and historical films with some of the more serious Oscar contenders also showing.

Here’s our pick for the month ahead, from amongst the releases out there.

WEAPONS

Pitched as a 2025 horror-thriller with an ensemble cast, Weapons begins with the mysterious disappearance of seventeen elementary school children who simultaneously vanish from their homes at 2:17 a.m., leaving only one student behind. The film uses interwoven perspectives to explore the ensuing chaos, suspicion, and grief that grips the community as they try to understand the inexplicable event, eventually revealing the sinister, supernatural influence of a powerful witch named Gladys. (Be prepared for some grisly scenes).

THE LONG WALK

Adapted from a book from legendary author, Stephen King, the plot centres on a group of teenage boys competing in an annual contest known as “The Long Walk,” where they must maintain a certain walking speed or get shot. In the near future, where America has become a police state, one hundred boys are selected to enter an annual contest where the winner will be awarded whatever he wants for the rest of his life. The game is simple – maintain a steady walking pace of four miles per hour without stopping. Three warnings, and you’re out – permanently.

Billed as a grueling, dystopian sci-fi horror film, The Long Walk has been praised for its chillingly relevant premise, powerful performances from actors Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson, the brutal depiction of violence and suffering, and the exploration of human camaraderie and desperation against an oppressive authoritarian regime.

A BIG BOLD BEAUTIFUL JOURNEY

If you’re looking for some lighter relief, check out this giddy romantic fantasy that sends its two commitment-phobe leads on a magical road trip through their pasts that may lead them back to love.
Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell play Sarah and David, two mind-blowingly attractive single professionals who meet and warily flirt at the wedding of mutual friends; when Sarah’s rental car breaks down afterwards, they wind up sharing David’s and go on a road trip together away from unhappy commitment-phobia and towards self-forgiveness and love. There’s a lot more to it than that of course,

viewed by some critics as a great story, with brilliant cinematography, a good script and with quite a few curve balls thrown at the audience.

DOWNTON ABBEY: THE GRAND FINALE

Yes, its time to say goodbye and no cinema listing at the moment would be complete without the return of the global phenomenon following the Crawley family and and their staff as they enter the 1930s. The film begins with the summer of 1930, when the Crowley’s grapple with the threat of social disgrace when Mary finds herself at the centre of a public scandal and the family faces financial trouble.

In this most definitely final film of the series the cast of characters navigates how to lead Downton Abbey into the future, there quest to embrace change and welcome a new chapter, with film critics calling it an elegant and accomplished farewell.
