In our humble opinion, there’s still nothing quite like seeing a brilliant movie on a big screen with all the amazing sound effects seemingly coming out of nowhere and indulging in a bit of escapism. So as the nights get darker, now is a really good time to think about supporting the cinema industry by treating yourself to a cinema ticket and maybe even one of those enormous tubs of popcorn.

It’s also that time of the year when all the really good grown-up movies start coming out, with actors doing the promotional rounds for those films most likely to be Academy Award contenders in time for next years Oscar Awards Ceremony. I don’t know about you, but I could kick myself when the Oscars are announced in March, with most of the ‘must see’ winning films no longer available on the ‘big screen’.

If you haven’t been to the cinema for some time, prepare to be impressed! Not only is the picture and sound quality superb, comfy seats with plenty of legroom come as standard in most cinemas. Some cinemas even have armchairs and a food order service for anyone wanting their cinema snacks bought to their seats. Some of the small independent cinemas go one further offering a glass of wine with your ticket.

With all sorts of offers springing up now, some cinemas like the Odeon are offering midweek tickets from as a little as a fiver, providing us with a chance to get out there and get some good value entertainment.

If you’re a musical fan and up for some much-needed twists and slightly scary bits, as always at this time of year there are some really good psychological nail biting films coming up in the next few weeks. There’s also a good mix of good old fashioned heart warming tales and historical films with some of the more serious Oscar contenders also showing.

Here’s our pick for the month ahead, from amongst the releases out there.

WICKED; FOR GOOD

Last year’s global cinematic phenomenon — the most successful Broadway adaptation in history — now reaches its epic, electrifying, and emotional conclusion in Wicked: For Good. Billed as a partner film rather than a sequel, it stands alongside the first instalment with equal importance.

As an angry mob rises against the Wicked Witch, Glinda and Elphaba must unite one final time. With their extraordinary friendship now the centre of their futures, they must truly see one another with honesty and empathy if they hope to transform themselves — and all of Oz — for good.

THE RUNNING MAN

The Running Man is a nightmarish tale about Ben Richards, forced to compete in a deadly televised game show where contestants are hunted by professional assassins. Richards must survive not only to win money for his sick daughter but also to expose the corruption of a society addicted to violent spectacle. If I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! makes you a bit queasy, brace yourself and cover your eyes for this film.

NUREMBERG

Set against the backdrop of the real-life Nuremberg Trials (1945-1946), Nuremberg follows U.S. Army psychiatrist Douglas Kelley (Rami Malek) as he assesses Nazi prisoners mental fitness ahead of their historic trials, locking horns in a tense psychological battle with Hermann Göring (Russell Crowe). With top-tier performances and a prestige production, the film explores the moral and mental challenges of confronting the architects of war crimes and has already quickly gained attention as a strong Oscar contender.

THE THING WITH FEATHERS

Oscar nominee Benedict Cumberbatch stars in The Thing with Feathers, adapted from Max Porter’s award-winning debut novel. After his wife’s death, a young father’s grip on reality falters, and a mysterious man-like crow—voiced by David Thewlis—emerges from his own illustrations to haunt the home he shares with his two sons.

As this uncanny presence grows more real, it guides the grieving family toward the new form their lives must take. A lyrical tale of love, loss, and the strange paths to healing.
